President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday held a closed-door meeting with Nigeria’s top military and intelligence chiefs at the State House, directing them to deliver “greater efficiency, stronger coordination, and improved execution” in the fight against terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping.
The meeting, which lasted for over an hour, came just days after Tinubu declared a national security emergency and only hours after he nominated former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa (retd.), as the new Minister of Defence. In attendance were National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Director-General of the Department of State Services Oluwatosin Ajayi, Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed, Chief of Defence Staff General Olufemi Oluyede, Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant-General Wahidi Shaibu, Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Kelvin Aneke, and Chief of Defence Intelligence Lieutenant-General Emmanuel Undiadeye.
Speaking afterwards, General Oluyede told correspondents that the President demanded “tangible results” and assured Nigerians of a safer yuletide season. He explained that Tinubu was unequivocal in his call for strategies that deliver visible improvements, promising citizens a more stable and peaceful environment in the coming weeks.
This latest engagement is part of a series of high-level consultations since Tinubu’s emergency declaration. Measures already announced include the redeployment of 100,000 police officers from VIP duties, the recruitment of 20,000 additional personnel, and intensified air and ground operations in areas most affected by banditry and insurgency.
